Karma Please is the ambient soundscape project of Dell Rickwood, created in 2002 whilst studying music technology at university. Dell got involved with creating soundtracks and foley for short film projects alongside being infatuated with Musique Concrét and the disintegrating tape loops of Basinski. Dell combined his love for spending hours walking urban and natural environments, collecting sounds and field recording, all things Warp and Constellation Records and a healthy dose of Dub to be manipulated through tape loops, samplers and granular synthesis.
Describing the output from the project, Dell says “ Karma Please explores the concepts and emotions behind time, decay and repetition. How fragile moments can be captured and transformed into vast soundscapes, awash with delicate intricacies that rise and fall like the tides”
“Karma Please employs an impressive combination of near obsolete tech with innovative software. An old Akai sampler that utilises floppy discs and self-made cassette loops emit drones fit for a cathedral. A granular synthesis app deconstructs the source sounds into decadent overtones, the stoic reveries of which are occasionally shattered by the clunking four-track tape machine” – THE WIRE
Karma Please was initially a side project whilst Dell played bass, releasing two albums and touring with “The WorldOnFire” alongside stints in other bands. In 2005 a debut EP was released through the now defunct “Zebox” streaming service, earning a spot in the “Artist Of The Week” followed by a full length CD in 2008 through Shedio Records to coincide with the first Karma Please live shows. A handful of sporadic and increasingly complex online releases through the 2010’s paved the way to a new, revised and stripped down workflow and in 2022 a new full-length release entitled “Gwirith” was released on cassette and digital download via BandCamp, alongside a run of live shows at festivals including Strawberry Fair and performances at Wilbury Radio, Exburymental, Cuckoo Farm Studio and numerous EMOMs.
